Overview
Main functions of the ministry:
- regulation of relations in the sphere of culture (art, cinema, protection and usage of historical and cultural heritage);
- support of museums, culture, art and national artistic trades institutions;
- preservation, revival and development of traditional crafts of the Vologda Region;
- management of service of libraries.
One of the primary functions of the Ministry of Culture is the preservation of the archives of Government Ministries and Departments and related administrative units, and this involves the selection of those records having permanent value, the arrangement and description of archives, and the provision of a reference service to scholars, to Government Ministries and Departments and to the general public. As the government's recordkeeping authority, the Ministry works to ensure effective information management and acts as the official guardian of Vologda Oblast's public archives.
The holdings of the archives and records service comprise records in a variety of media. This includes paper-based textual records, electronic records as well as audio-visual, photographic and cartographic material. Governmental bodies produce vast amounts of administrative records.
As an executive body with diverse functions, the Ministry carries out its mission through a number of subordinate offices and institutions. There are state and municipal archives in the Vologda Oblast.
The main functions of the Ministry and its subordinate institutions in the sphere of records activities include:
- to collect material in or about the Vologda Oblast;
- to preserve the archival heritage of the Vologda Oblast;
- to make the archival heritage accessible to people.

Last year, the Trakai Historical Museum (Lithuania) announced an international bookplate competition. Trakai was declared Lithuanian Capital of Culture for 2020. Contributing to the city’s cultural initiatives, the Trakai History Museum organised an international bookplate competition - “Trakai Peninsula Castle: Unicorn - a Symbol of Cultural and Historical Heritage”. The competition aims to promote the art of the ex libris, as well as raising the profile of Trakai Peninsula Castle and its symbol, the unicorn.
On January 20, 2021 museum visitors, curators, and managers from all over the world will be taking part in #MuseumSelfie day, a Twitter project aimed at raising awareness of the great collections being housed by national and regional museums across the globe.
The exhibition is organized by the International Federation of Ex-Libris Societies, an international non-governmental organization that aims to organize cultural exchange and communication between graphic artists from different countries. Its main objective is to cultivate and promote an interest in and devotion to bookplates and enhance their artistic qualities.
New Year and Christmas season are the busiest times in Veliky Ustyug as numerous visitors are keen to experience the true magic of New Year and Christmas in the Official Hometown of Ded Moroz.
From December 19, 2020 to January 11, 2021 New Year and Christmas celebrations took place in the cities and towns of the Vologda Region. Due to the epidemiological situation, serious precautions were taken: use of face masks and social distancing was a must. About 148,000 people visited the Vologda Oblast during New Year and Christmas holidays.
Vologda has much to offer the discerning visitor. The Vologda Region has a remarkable place on Russia's tourist map. With a unique cultural and historical heritage, the region, abundant with architectural monuments and arts, has great tourism potential.
The international tourism film festival “Rendezvous with Russia” is organized by the non-profit partnership for Promotion of Film Industry and Tourism in association with the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, the Federal Agency for Tourism of the Russian Federation and the Association of Russian Filmmakers.
The festival has been held in Russia since 2010. Originally, the project began as an All-Russian festival of non-fiction tourist cinema, and in 2012 the festival was given an international status.
Representatives of the Vologda Region took part in the International Craft Congress that is organized by the RF Ministry of Industry and Trade. It involves leading Russian and foreign associations and organizations of craftspeople, federal and regional authorities, delegations from constituent entities of the Russian Federation, business communities, research and development enterprises, the public and media.
“Rendezvous with Russia”, an international film festival, will open on December 14 in the Vologda Region, featuring Russian and foreign films, documentaries and animated movies.
