Ministry of Culture

Overview

Main functions of the ministry:

  • regulation of relations in the sphere of culture (art, cinema, protection and usage of historical and cultural heritage);
  • support of museums, culture, art and national artistic trades institutions;
  • preservation, revival and development of traditional crafts of the Vologda Region;
  • management of service of libraries.

One of the primary functions of the Ministry of Culture is the preservation of the archives of Government Ministries and Departments and related administrative units, and this involves the selection of those records having permanent value, the arrangement and description of archives, and the provision of a reference service to scholars, to Government Ministries and Departments and to the general public. As the government's recordkeeping authority, the Ministry works to ensure effective information management and acts as the official guardian of Vologda Oblast's public archives.

The holdings of the archives and records service comprise records in a variety of media. This includes paper-based textual records, electronic records as well as audio-visual, photographic and cartographic material. Governmental bodies produce vast amounts of administrative records.

As an executive body with diverse functions, the Ministry carries out its mission through a number of subordinate offices and institutions. There are state and municipal archives in the Vologda Oblast.

The main functions of the Ministry and its subordinate institutions in the sphere of records activities include:

  • to collect material in or about the Vologda Oblast;
  • to preserve the archival heritage of the Vologda Oblast;
  • to make the archival heritage accessible to people.

Free museum day on June 18th.

On June 18th, many of the region's museums and galleries offer free entry in order to have a more diverse range of visitors.

500 masters from three countries and fourty Russian regions came to City of Crafts Festival in Vologda.

The City of Crafts International Festival of Folk Crafts was in Vologda on June 12-14. For the eleventh time, masters from dozens of Russian regions gathered in the city. Artisans from Georgia, Uzbekistan and Belarus also arrived.

 Spaso-Prilutsky Monastery will host IV Orthodox Cuisine Festival on June 7.

The festival is organised by the Vologda Archdiocese and Vologda City Administration.

Vologda and Tot’ma will host IX All-Russian conference “Russian North”.

The conference “Russian North” held on April 22-26 in Vologda and Tot’ma will gather over 70 students and postgraduates, university professors and school teachers, scientists, archivists and museum employees from Russia. Vologda will host V International Lace Festival VITA LACE on July 17-20, 2025. The International Lace Festival VITA LACE collects everything related to the world of linen industry: fabrics, clothes, textile, souvenirs and accessories.

Vologda will host XI International Folk Crafts Festival "City of Crafts” on June 12-14.

The festival is aimed at popularization of folk arts and handicrafts among the younger generation. It is arranged with an active backing of the Vologda City Administration and a Handicrafts Centre “Reznoi Palisad (Carved Fence)”.

"Spring of Victory in the Russian North" will bring together hundreds of events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

"Victory Spring in the Russian North" is a project initiated by Governor of the Vologda Region Georgy Filimonov. "Russian North Summer" and "Russian North Winter" which were successfully implemented in the region were not themed, but spring 2025 is marked by the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory. This year has been declared the Year of the Defender of the Fatherland in Russia.

Vologda is competing for the title of "Cultural Capital of Russia 2027".

The Cultural Capitals competition began in 2023 and annually takes place in Russia. During the event, a prestigious title is awarded to one city in the country by a panel of experts. Cities with at least 250,000 inhabitants are invited to participate.

The date of the magician's birthday was chosen by weather chart makers as their long-term observations register that on that very day the ground of Veliky Ustyug is usually covered with a heavy snow blanket. No one knows his exact age. Although experts insist his career began more than 150 years ago, the first mentions of his appearance in noble Russian families on Christmas and New Year eve date back to the beginning of the 19th century.

A cooperation agreement was signed between the Vologda Lace Museum and the National Museum of Liechtenstein. The parties agreed on cooperation in various areas of museum activity, including exhibition, scientific, methodical, information, and publishing.

The exhibition in Vologda is organised by the Russian Academy of Arts, the Embassy of Switzerland in Russia, the National Museum of Liechtenstein, and "Peace and Harmony" Foundation within the framework of partnership relations with Russia which in 2014 marked 200 years.
