The history of Tot’ma is also the story of many outstanding people - seafarers, merchants, poets and artists. One of the oldest in Russia, it is known as a town of museums and seafarers. In the second half of the 18th century, 20 expeditions left from Totma. One of the most important led to the discovery of the Commander Islands and the Aleutian Islands off the coast of Alaska.

Being the cultural capital of the Russian North, Vologda will host the 6th All-Russian Ex-libris Exhibition on August 22-26. It will feature ex-libris creations from many Russian regions and such CIS-countries as Belarus, Ukraine, Estonia and Kazakhstan. After the congress all the works will be donated to the Vologda Picture Gallery.

On Tuesday, August 8 Dmitry Medvedev held a meeting on preservation and rational use of the Volga River. The participants of the meeting discussed construction and modernization of treatment facilities of the Volga River, and preservation of a unique ecosystem of the Volga-Akhtubinsk flood-plain area.
