Overview
Main functions of the ministry:
- regulation of relations in the sphere of culture (art, cinema, protection and usage of historical and cultural heritage);
- support of museums, culture, art and national artistic trades institutions;
- preservation, revival and development of traditional crafts of the Vologda Region;
- management of service of libraries.
One of the primary functions of the Ministry of Culture is the preservation of the archives of Government Ministries and Departments and related administrative units, and this involves the selection of those records having permanent value, the arrangement and description of archives, and the provision of a reference service to scholars, to Government Ministries and Departments and to the general public. As the government's recordkeeping authority, the Ministry works to ensure effective information management and acts as the official guardian of Vologda Oblast's public archives.
The holdings of the archives and records service comprise records in a variety of media. This includes paper-based textual records, electronic records as well as audio-visual, photographic and cartographic material. Governmental bodies produce vast amounts of administrative records.
As an executive body with diverse functions, the Ministry carries out its mission through a number of subordinate offices and institutions. There are state and municipal archives in the Vologda Oblast.
The main functions of the Ministry and its subordinate institutions in the sphere of records activities include:
- to collect material in or about the Vologda Oblast;
- to preserve the archival heritage of the Vologda Oblast;
- to make the archival heritage accessible to people.

The exhibition under the heading “Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker - mystery, figment and truth” opened in the Winckelmann-Museum in Stendal, Germany. The Winckelmann-Museum in Stenda is showing a temporary exhibition of icons of St. Nicholas, items from the collections of the Vologda State Museum-Preserve, the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery, Veliky Ustyug Museum, the Museum of Dionisy's frescoes in Ferapontovo and Tot’ma museum association.
The Vologda Region has been sustaining cultural ties with Switzerland and Liechtenstein for years. The year 2015 saw the signing of a cooperation agreement between the Vologda State Museum-Preserve and the Swiss Gallery “Beyeler Collection Foundation” and the National Museum of Liechtenstein.
A project called New Year Capital was launched in Russia several years ago. It was initiated by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation in 2013. The All-Russian project “New Year Capital of Russia” is designed to stimulate the development of domestic tourism.
The international festival has been held since 1992. Its aim is the exchange of stage presentation experiences and interpretation of the literary heritage of the great Russian writer.
The Vologda Region has been nominated for an award at the National Geographic Traveler Awards 2016 in the category “Vacation in Russia with Excursions”. Winners will be decided through online voting on the website of the National Geographic Russia magazine.
Lace-makers from 18 Russian regions (St. Petersburg, Vologda, Leningrad, Yaroslavl, Moscow and Murmansk regions among them) will take part in the All-Russian competition "Silver Bobbin".
Vologda Region will celebrate a Night of the Arts on November 4th.
Galleries, museums, theatres, libraries and other cultural venues invite Vologda’s residents and guests to the city to visit night concerts, performances, excursions, presentations, meet-the-artist events and master classes.
A hot piano player Polina Fradkina and an exceptionally charming Cuban percussion player Joel Gonzales founded IN-TEMPORALIS duo in 2008. The performances of the duo were a success in Holland, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Armenia, Norway and Russia.
INWETEX - CIS Travel Market is the largest trade fair of travel services in the North-West of Russia which was held in St. Petersburg, Russia on October13-15.
The opening ceremony of the exhibition “Vologda’s lace – treasure of the Russian North” was visited by RF Consul General in Liechtenstein Mr Klaus Tschütscher,director of the Liechtenstein National Museum and representatives of European cultural and public organizations.
