Overview
Main functions of the ministry:
- regulation of relations in the sphere of culture (art, cinema, protection and usage of historical and cultural heritage);
- support of museums, culture, art and national artistic trades institutions;
- preservation, revival and development of traditional crafts of the Vologda Region;
- management of service of libraries.
One of the primary functions of the Ministry of Culture is the preservation of the archives of Government Ministries and Departments and related administrative units, and this involves the selection of those records having permanent value, the arrangement and description of archives, and the provision of a reference service to scholars, to Government Ministries and Departments and to the general public. As the government's recordkeeping authority, the Ministry works to ensure effective information management and acts as the official guardian of Vologda Oblast's public archives.
The holdings of the archives and records service comprise records in a variety of media. This includes paper-based textual records, electronic records as well as audio-visual, photographic and cartographic material. Governmental bodies produce vast amounts of administrative records.
As an executive body with diverse functions, the Ministry carries out its mission through a number of subordinate offices and institutions. There are state and municipal archives in the Vologda Oblast.
The main functions of the Ministry and its subordinate institutions in the sphere of records activities include:
- to collect material in or about the Vologda Oblast;
- to preserve the archival heritage of the Vologda Oblast;
- to make the archival heritage accessible to people.

The exhibition of Vologda’s lace will kick off at the National Museum of Liechtenstein on September 30th, 2016 and it will last till January 2017.
The 22nd international trade fair for travel & tourism OTDYKH LEISURE 2016 is held on September 21st–24th, at the Expocentre Fairgrounds, Moscow.
On August 31 the Deputy Head of the Vologda Region Department of Culture and Tourism presented a tourism project “Silver Necklace of Russia” within the framework of the international exhibition - fair AGRORUS-2016. He told about the main stages of the implementation of the project and guidelines for further development.
Vologda will host the 36th International FISAE Congress on August 22-27, arranged with an active support of the RF Ministry of Culture, the Vologda Oblast Government and Administration of Vologda City.
The exhibition of European lace "Ladies in Lace" opened on April 13 at the Vologda Lace Museum.
1,500 craftsmen from Russia, China, Iran and Slovenia applied to participate in the 3rd International festival in Vologda.
Lace works from private collections of German collectors of Annelise Wienands and Marianne Stang will form the basis of a new exhibition project "Ladies in Lace" that will open on April 13 and last till mid-November.
Vologda will host the 36th International FISAE Congress on August 22-27, 2016.This decision was taken at an international ex-libris event in La Pineda, a holiday resort on the Costa Dorada, Spain's “Golden Coast”.
In March the Vologda Oblast Government and the Vologda branch of the all-Russian public organization "Russian Geographical Society” launched a new competition aiming to select treasures of Russian North.
The main objective of the visit is to get acquainted with the historical and cultural heritage of the Vologda Region. The visiting Public Affairs Officer of US Consulate General in St. Petersburg has already attended the Vologda State Museum-Preserve, the Vologda Lace Museum, the Museum of Architecture and Ethnography in Semenkovo and the Memorial Flat of Ivan Kuskov, the founder of Fort Ross in California.
