Overview
Main functions of the ministry:
- regulation of relations in the sphere of culture (art, cinema, protection and usage of historical and cultural heritage);
- support of museums, culture, art and national artistic trades institutions;
- preservation, revival and development of traditional crafts of the Vologda Region;
- management of service of libraries.
One of the primary functions of the Ministry of Culture is the preservation of the archives of Government Ministries and Departments and related administrative units, and this involves the selection of those records having permanent value, the arrangement and description of archives, and the provision of a reference service to scholars, to Government Ministries and Departments and to the general public. As the government's recordkeeping authority, the Ministry works to ensure effective information management and acts as the official guardian of Vologda Oblast's public archives.
The holdings of the archives and records service comprise records in a variety of media. This includes paper-based textual records, electronic records as well as audio-visual, photographic and cartographic material. Governmental bodies produce vast amounts of administrative records.
As an executive body with diverse functions, the Ministry carries out its mission through a number of subordinate offices and institutions. There are state and municipal archives in the Vologda Oblast.
The main functions of the Ministry and its subordinate institutions in the sphere of records activities include:
- to collect material in or about the Vologda Oblast;
- to preserve the archival heritage of the Vologda Oblast;
- to make the archival heritage accessible to people.

It is held annually with an active backing of the Vologda Oblast Government. The venue of the Gates to the North is the Exhibition Centre "Russky Dom".
A delegation of the Consortium of European Cultures visited Vologda’s branch of the All-Russian Art Research and Restoration Center named after Academician I.E. Grabar.
Ladya is an exhibition for the Russian craftwork. Artists of the whole country take part there presenting the visitor many unique and world-famous artworks.
Russian Pancake week called " Maslenitsa" will be celebrated from Monday March 4th to Sunday March 10th.
The exhibition of Vologda’s lace will kick off in Gomel on March 6 and it will last till April, 28.
The conference “Russia’s North” held on February 27-March 2 in Vologda and Tot’ma gathered over 70 experts from Russia and Austria. The event will touch upon problems of study and preservation of historical and cultural heritage.
The international photo festival has been created by the Russian Photo Union. Its aim is to gather photographers from around the world, turning the town of Kirillov into an international centre of artistic expression focusing on photography. It will involve international artists from such countries as Russia, Ukraine, France, Germany, the Chinese People’s Republic and Kazakhstan.

Vologda’s cultural institutions may apply for participation in the Internet Festival of Museum Multimedia “Museum Geek” organized by the State Museum of History of Religion (St. Petersburg).
The festival is named after Valery Gavrilin, the great Russian composer, People's artist of Russia who was born in Vologda.
