On 23-25 July, the 11th Russian Hanseatic Day will be celebrated in Veliky Ustyug under the theme "Conserving the past, shaping the future!". The event coincides with the traditional town festival and the Prokopius market. The logo of the event shows a historic ship on the Suchona River, symbolizing the trade between the Hanseatic cities.

In all modesty, it can be said that the Russian North begins at Vologda. Vologda lace and butter and the home of Ded Moroz (Grandfather Frost) - Veliky Ustyug - are not the only things to see in this region. The ancient Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery, wooden architecture, descendants of artisans, the ancient towns of Vologda Province and the town of Russian sailors - Totma, - this is the true treasure of Vologda, framed by the picturesque northern wilderness.

“The famous city of Cherepovets or, simply put, Northern Athens… Here, people from different places of Novgorod and neighboring provinces come to study,” Russian economist Andrey Subbotin wrote in 1894. Indeed, ‘Northern Athens’ was the name of Cherepovets during the period when the mayor of the city was merchant and shipowner Ivan Andreevich Milyutin.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Russian chemist and photographer Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky developed a complex process for vivid color photography. His vision of photography as a form of education and enlightenment appeared with special clarity in his images of Russia’s architectural heritage.

Vologda has played an important role in the development of the Russian North. A secluded lake district, where the city is located, had been attracting monks since the fourteenth century. The majestic Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery and the chamber Ferapontov Monastery with Dionisy’s frescoes, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, have been preserved here since then. Vologda is called the city of fifty domes. Today there are 26 functional temples in the city, and this is only a third of the pre-revolutionary list! To see monasteries and churches, to learn all about the finest Vologda lace, famous in Russia, and appreciate a creamy flavor of the popular Vologda butter — these are the basic arguments for traveling to this northern quiet town.

Whatever the season, the Russian north possesses a special charm, with its forested landscape and old towns along river trading networks that once carried Russia's wealth to the West and to Siberia.  The faded glory of these historic settlements is particularly evident in the churches, great and small, that dot the countryside in various states of disrepair. They are at their best, perhaps, in the late summer, when the mosquito swarms have diminished and the sunlight is still rich and warm.
