The first meeting of the Vologda Historical Society devoted to the 245th anniversary of foundation of permanent Russian settlements on the North American continent is to be held on January 19th in the Vologda Scientific Library. The event id also aimed to commemorate 150th anniversary of Alaska purchase.

In 2017 the honour to become New Year’s Capital of Russia’s North fell upon Vologda again. The New Year was celebrated in a special way, because every Russian city has its own traditions of celebrating. Vologda’s authorities planned a number of major festive actions and events not only in Vologda, but also in Veliky Ustyug, the hometown of Ded Moroz, Russia’s equivalent of Santa Claus.

Russian Ded Moroz lit up the first New Year’s tree in Veliky Ustyug on his birthday, on November 18th, and set off for his pre-New Year journey. By tradition, a lot of guests came to Veliky Ustiug for Ded Moroz’s birthday. His friends and colleagues from other Russian cities and the near abroad gathered there.
