Vologda Region has won the National Geographic Traveler Award in Ecological Vacation in Russia nomination.

The Vologda Region has been nominated for an award at the National Geographic Traveler Awards 2016 in several categories. Winners were decided through online voting on the website of the National Geographic Russia magazine.

Ded Moroz, or Russia’s Santa Claus, will celebrate his birthday on November 18.

According to a newly created legend, Ded Moroz was born on November 18th in Veliky Ustyug, a small town in the Vologda region. The date of the magician's birthday was chosen by weather chart makers as their long-term observations register that on that very day the ground of Veliky Ustyug is usually covered with a heavy snow blanket. No one knows his exact age. Although experts insist his career began more than 150 years ago, the first mentions of his appearance in noble Russian families on Christmas and New Year eve date back to the beginning of the 19th century.

Governor Oleg Kuvshinnikov has arrived in the District of Belozersk on a working visit.

The programme of the visit is rather busy. It includes a visit to the wood processing facilities and a production line of fuel briquettes.

One of the most valuable collections from Vologda’s museums - icons of St. Nicholas are on display in Stendal, Germany.

The exhibition under the heading “Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker - mystery, figment and truth” opened in the Winckelmann-Museum in Stendal, Germany. The Winckelmann-Museum in Stenda is showing a temporary exhibition of icons of St. Nicholas, items from the collections of the Vologda State Museum-Preserve, the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery, Veliky Ustyug Museum, the Museum of Dionisy's frescoes in Ferapontovo and Tot’ma museum association.

Vologda’s artists will participate in an exhibition “Russian Masters” in Pratteln, canton of Basel-Landschaft in Switzerland.

The Vologda Region has been sustaining cultural ties with Switzerland and Liechtenstein for years. The year 2015 saw the signing of a cooperation agreement between the Vologda State Museum-Preserve and the Swiss Gallery “Beyeler Collection Foundation” and the National Museum of Liechtenstein.

From December 7 through 9 the Exhibition Centre Russky Dom in Vologda will be hosting an international exhibition-fair "Russian Wood".

In general, Russian Wood collects everything related to the world of timber industry, production of technological equipment for forestry and manufacture of wood and wood-working articles. Trade visitors from Russian regions and foreign companies will display their products and equipment, achievements in timber industry.

Upcoming New Year celebrations in Vologda will be special: Vologda is due to become New Year Capital of Russia’s North in 2017.

A project called New Year Capital was launched in Russia several years ago. It was initiated by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation in 2013. The All-Russian project “New Year Capital of Russia” is designed to stimulate the development of domestic tourism.

Vologda Theatre for Children and Youth took part in 20th International Chamber Performances Festival based on Fedor Dostoyevsky's Works.

The international festival has been held since 1992. Its aim is the exchange of stage presentation experiences and interpretation of the literary heritage of the great Russian writer.
