Overview
Main functions of the ministry:
- regulation of relations in the sphere of culture (art, cinema, protection and usage of historical and cultural heritage);
- support of museums, culture, art and national artistic trades institutions;
- preservation, revival and development of traditional crafts of the Vologda Region;
- management of service of libraries.
One of the primary functions of the Ministry of Culture is the preservation of the archives of Government Ministries and Departments and related administrative units, and this involves the selection of those records having permanent value, the arrangement and description of archives, and the provision of a reference service to scholars, to Government Ministries and Departments and to the general public. As the government's recordkeeping authority, the Ministry works to ensure effective information management and acts as the official guardian of Vologda Oblast's public archives.
The holdings of the archives and records service comprise records in a variety of media. This includes paper-based textual records, electronic records as well as audio-visual, photographic and cartographic material. Governmental bodies produce vast amounts of administrative records.
As an executive body with diverse functions, the Ministry carries out its mission through a number of subordinate offices and institutions. There are state and municipal archives in the Vologda Oblast.
The main functions of the Ministry and its subordinate institutions in the sphere of records activities include:
- to collect material in or about the Vologda Oblast;
- to preserve the archival heritage of the Vologda Oblast;
- to make the archival heritage accessible to people.

The folklore festival “The Village - the Soul of Russia” has been held in the Vologda Region since 2014. This year it will take place in Verkhovazhye District.
Vologda will host the International Folk Crafts Festival “City of Crafts” on June 23-25. The Craft Festival is an event that showcases crafts that are authentically made by talented artisans and crafters.
Local residents, guests and tourists will have a wonderful opportunity to plunge into the interesting historical epoch - the 17th century and see reenactment of the monastery defence against the Polish-Lithuanian invaders with their own eyes.
Original and distinctive are the productions of Vologda’s folk artists. The local traditions of decorative and applied arts have their roots in the hoary past. In their craft the masters put their high workmanship and practical wisdom. And their productions acquired the value of genuine art.
“Summer in the Kremlin” covering different genres and styles of music will last till August 6.

The curator of the exhibition is Andrey Martynov, a collector from Moscow. Exhibitions of his collections of contemporary oriental art have been repeatedly held in the Vologda Art Gallery and have always aroused great interest among visitors.
The project “Summer in the Kremlin” was launched in 2002. It alternates with the International Drama Festival “Voices of History”. Every two years the festival welcomes Vologda’s citizens and guests of the city with a special atmosphere.
The film festival will gather European cinema lovers and will take an investigative look at young directors and their latest creations.
Kirillov will become home to the traditional historical reenactment festival "Kirillo- Belozersky Siege" on June 24-25.
