Ministry of Agriculture and Food Stocks
Overview
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Stocks of the Vologda Oblast is the principal agency responsible for promotion of agricultural and fisheries development and growth. In pursuit of this, it provides the policy framework, helps direct public investments, and in partnership with local government units provides the support services necessary to make agriculture and agri-based enterprises profitable.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Stocks enforces standards for wholesomeness and quality of meat, poultry and eggs produced in the Vologda Oblast. Its food safety activities include inspecting poultry, eggs, and domestic and imported meat; inspecting livestock and production plants; and making quality inspections for grain, fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry and dairy products.
Main functions of the Ministry:
- policy with regard to agriculture and the food industry and the development of the fishing industry;
 - implementing the national project to support agriculture;
 - agriculture management;
 - agricultural production management;
 - food industry management;
 - management of livestock breeding, seed-farming, land development, veterinary science;
 - conservation of aquatic biological resources;
 - aquaculture, protection and use of regional natural biological (zoological) preserves;
 - ensuring biological safety on the territory of the Vologda Region;
 - implementation of measures to develop trading activities and ensure consumer rights;
 - control and supervision in the field of veterinary science;
 - protecting animal health and animal welfare;
 - protection from invasive non-native plants, animals, insects, and diseases;
 - monitoring and management of existing agricultural pests and diseases;
 - resolution and management of trade issues related to animal health;
 - prevention, detection, control, and eradication of diseases and pests of animals;
 - investigation, demonstrations and control of “injurious animal species”;
 - suppression of disease in livestock and prevention of epidemics;
 - control for observance of normative and legal documents.

In 2021, Vologda’s producers increased exports of food products and agricultural raw materials by more than 32%. One of the main reasons for it is the increase in the volume of supplies of high added value products, primarily food products and beverages.

The “Tastes of Russia” competition opens up prospects for the development of regional brands and rural areas. The competition is aimed at popularizing unique products produced in Russian regions.

In the first half of 2020 fish farms of the region produced 288 tonnes of fish, 2.5 times more than in the same period last year. This information was presented at a meeting of the Vologda Region Fishery Council.
