Ded Moroz, or "Grandfather Frost" is Russia's Santa Claus
Like all countries in Eastern Europe, Russia has its own version of Santa Claus, who differs slightly from the jovial, round-bellied, red-suited gentleman who appears in Hollywood films and on American Christmas cards. The Russian Santa Claus is known as Ded Moroz. “Ded Moroz” translates to “Grandfather Frost” in English, but most English speakers simply call him “Father Frost.” He is a figure associated with Russian Christmas traditions and New Year's traditions.

Photos by William Brumfield on display until Jan. 13, 2017.
From the Solovetsky Islands to Veliky Ustug, the Russian North possesses an extraordinary reservoir of unexplored beauty. Since the 1970s, American Slavicist and historian William Craft Brumfield has been traveling across Russia, documenting unique buildings, houses and temples, some of which have since collapsed. Now his photographs of northern Russia’s architectural legacy are on display at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The exhibit, called "Architecture at the End of the Earth" after Brumfield’s latest book Architecture at the End of the Earth: Photographing the Russian North (Duke University Press, 2015), was organized by the Wolk Gallery, part of the MIT School of Architecture and Planning and curated by Ulrike Heine.
