Representatives of Russia and European countries discussed public health issues.

On December 7th, Vologda Region Governor participated in an annual conference with international participation “Healthy Cities” held via video conference.
Public health issues and working out of common recommendations and approaches for its preservation were discussed by members of the Political Committee of the European Network of the World Health Organization "Healthy Cities". The video conference meeting was attended by representatives of 13 European countries, including coordinators of national networks of "Healthy Cities", mayors of cities and politicians.
WHO Healthy Cities is a global movement working to put health high on the social, economic and political agenda of city governments.
Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe, in his welcoming speech expressed the hope that joint work on strengthening public health will receive an entirely new development at a meeting in St. Petersburg next year.
The Russian Federation was represented by Vologda Region Governor Oleg Kuvshinnikov, head of the Russian network "Healthy Cities" which is one of the largest in Europe. Today, within the framework of the annual conference of the international organization, the head of the Vologda Region outlined and clarified promising aspects of the global public health agenda.
Oleg Kuvshinnikov identified emerging issues rising from the COVID-19 pandemic:
- investment into social, economic and environmental spheres that affect the health of the population, emotional and mental health support;
- rehabilitation after COVID-19;
- use of information technologies in the field of public health and in medicine;
- analysing the varied global response to the COVID-19 pandemic and identifying measures that have worked best;
- support of European Immunization Agenda 2030;
- recognition of the role of cities as a driving force in solving global problems.
Making people healthier and developing medical science are rightly among government policy’s top priorities. There is an undisputed need for greater cooperation between the authorities, public organisations and business circles in this area.
The Association’s programmes and major projects and initiatives carried out in many different parts of Russia help to educate the public, promote a healthy way of life, and improve the demographic situation. The Russian National Network Association of Healthy Cities, Regions and Settlements also spreads the use of modern effective diagnosis, prevention and treatment methods in medical practice.
Mr. Kuvshinnikov heads the Russian National Network Association of Healthy Cities, Regions and Settlements that comprises over 100 municipalities with a population of 16 mln people. The Russian network of Healthy Cities has been operating since 2010.
