On the eve to the celebrations of 69th anniversary of victory in World War II, Vologda Oblast Governor Oleg Kuvshinnikov and Leningrad Oblast Governor Alexander Drozdenko took part in the official opening of the memorial plate devoted to Vologda natives who defended Leningrad City.

Throughout 1942, the military situation near Leningrad remained very difficult. The main Russian Army ground forces near Leningrad were still blocked by the Germans, and there was no communication with the besieged city, except for waterway on Lake Ladoga.
In 1942 Soviet troops twice made the attempts to break the blockade, but both times unsuccessfully.
The Sinyavino offensive was an operation planned by the Soviet Union with the aim of breaking the German blockade and establishing a reliable supply line to Leningrad which was under siege for almost a year.
Every year thousands of people from all over Russia come to the Cemetery and National Memorial Sinyavino Heights to commemorate the Soviet forces who were trying to lift the siege of Leningrad in 1941-1943.
"I want to thank our veterans, our Heroes who won that war on the battlefields, in hospitals and in the rear areas. Special thanks to the search detachments whose efforts are aimed to restore the history of our country and to preserve the memory of the feat of the Soviet people", said Vologda Oblast Governor Oleg Kuvshinnikov.
