Easter in Russia is celebrated as one of the main religious feast among Orthodox Christians.
Easter marks the end of a forty day fast that commenced at the time of the Maslenitsa. This year the Orthodox church celebrates Easter on April 12.
On this day, the Museum of Architecture and Ethnography in Semyonkovo (Vologda District) will offer a festive ethnographic program "Bright Easter" dedicated to the holiday.
On Orthodox Easter Sunday, it will be possible to take part in Easter prayer service, master classes, to join street festivities, to listen to folk songs of the Easter period, to ring bells and ride horses.
Easter is the day of abundant food. In Orthodox Christian tradition, kulich, paskha (a sweet pyramid-shaped pudding), and painted eggs are essential symbols of Easter.
Kulich is a cylindrical cake that is the centerpiece of every festive Easter table in Russia. The semi-sweet cake is stuffed with dried fruits, almonds and other delightful treats. Russian families are used to celebrate Easter holiday by painting eggs with various colors with a predominant of red as Russia's favourite color.
