In all modesty, it can be said that the Russian North begins at Vologda. Vologda lace and butter and the home of Ded Moroz (Grandfather Frost) - Veliky Ustyug - are not the only things to see in this region. The ancient Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery, wooden architecture, descendants of artisans, the ancient towns of Vologda Province and the town of Russian sailors - Totma, - this is the true treasure of Vologda, framed by the picturesque northern wilderness.

Vologda region is located in the North of the European part of Russia, and it is worth to go here, of course, not for a beach holiday, but for the national flavor, in search of the mysterious Russian soul. The region is notable for the fact that at one time the «revolutionary whirlwinds» did not affect most of the temples in Vologda and Veliky Ustyug, they are preserved in their original form and attract not only Russians but also tourists from around the world. The region is interesting for its wooden architecture and traditional crafts such as lace weaving and Vologda butter making. Nature deserves special attention. There are 13 nature reserves in the region, many picturesque places are declared natural monuments, and Darwin state reserve is located in Cherepovets district.

What you can do in the Vologda region

The region is characterized by short moderately warm summers (average temperature +20 degrees) and prolonged snowy winters, when the temperature can drop to -30. Therefore, in the summer you can go to the forest for mushrooms, hunt, fish, swim. In area hundreds of small reservoirs and five big lakes: White, Onega, Vozha, Kubenskoe, Kurskoe. 1. Vologda state Museum-reserve

The Museum was founded in the XIX century. 6. Dymkovskaya Sloboda

In this area of Veliky Ustyug there was an island of perfectly preserved buildings from the XVIII century. Among them are the gates, the Church fence and part of the corner tower, the winter Church of Sergius of Radonezh and the Church of Dmitry Solunsky with a bell tower, which is considered a unique monument of transition type from the traditions of the XVII century to the forms of the updated era. 7. Resurrection Cathedral

Resurrection Cathedral in Cherepovets — the oldest building in the city. It was built in the XIV century, several times burned, lost its purpose.
