Russian steelmaker PAO Severstal, Russian energy firm Rusnano and Spanish wind turbine tower manufacturer Windar Renovables have created a joint venture to produce steel towers for wind turbines in Russia.
The towers, the first of their kind to be manufactured in Russia, will be built in the country’s Rostov Region, Kallanish Energy reports. The wind energy equipment will be installed as part of a government program to develop and stimulate the generation of renewable energy in Russia.
Total investment in the JV project, known as WRS Bashni, will be more than 750 million rubles ($10.98 million). Windar Renovables will have a 51% stake in the JV, and Rusnano and Severstal will each hold 24.5%.
“Wind power accounts for a growing share of the world’s electricity generation, and we are seeing the beginning of this trend in Russia as well,” said Alexander Shevelev, Severstal’s CEO. “This project will enable the company to start supplying steel to an attractive new market and be part of a new value-added product segment.”
Windar will supply the technology to construct the towers, and Severstal will supply the steel plate necessary for production.
The JV will initially produce steel towers for Rusnano’s partnership with Finnish developer Fortum, which has won more than 1,800 megawatts of capacity via tenders awarded between June 2017 and June 2018.
It will eventually expand production so that it annually manufactures towers for turbines with a combined capacity of 300 MW within two years, the JV announced.
Towers will reach up to 394 feet in height, and weigh up to 290 tons.
