On 3 March 2021, the new Sokol CLT plant shipped Russia's first mass-produced cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels to its first customer, a buyer in the Leningrad Region. The plant belongs to Segezha Group, a Sistema JSFC company.
The CLT panels will be used in the construction of a single-family custom home, particularly as load-bearing components, mainly walls. The site area is around 250 m².
The order is relatively small, consisting of fourteen 3,000×9,000 mm panels shipped and an overall volume of around 60 m³. Based on the design, all panels are single piece, with window and door openings cut at the construction site.
Although installation is scheduled to commence on 10 March, the assembly of the load-bearing frame, including the floor slabs and the rafter system, is expected to be completed by the end of the month. This is one of the defining features of CLT panels: assembly speed.
"We have just kicked off the mass production of CLT panels at Segezha Group's new plant in Sokol. We are currently completing the European certification process in Austria, and have already signed contracts with both European and Russian customers. Demand is strong, as is interest in this advanced technology," says Dmitriy Rudenko, Segezha Group VP and Head of House-Building Division. He notes that the company plans to actively work to expand the Russian domestic market, although a large share of Sokol CLT's products has already been reserved by foreign partners.
Notes for editors:
The official launch of the Sokol CLT plant took place in February, in the town of Sokol, Vologda Region. It is Russia's first facility for the mass-production of this cutting-edge construction material. The factory is located at Sokol Timber Company JSC, Russia's leading producer of laminated wooden materials.
Segezha Group has invested over RUB 3 billion in the new manufacturing line, which has a production capacity of 50,000 cubic metres of finished product per year. The production line is equipped with machine tools from leading European manufacturers, including Ledinek, Imeas and SCM Group. The line is highly automated, with processes immaculately synchronised. The plant has created 50 new jobs.
The company is launching the production of CLT mouldings and custom panels with a thickness of 8 to 40 cm, a width up to 3.6 m and a length up to 16 m. The weight of a panel is around 500 kg/cubic metre. During production, sawn kiln-dried timber is sorted and spliced into panels. Each panel consists of three to nine layers. The glue is formaldehyde-free and is approved for indoor and outdoor use.
The large-scale rollout of high-quality CLT panels onto the construction market will contribute to the development of private residential construction using wood. This may also give rise to an entirely new sector of multi-storey wooden housing built using hybrid technologies in Russia. The use of CLT panels as building blocks significantly accelerates the construction of buildings, which provides a huge advantage when responding to the fallout from natural disasters, dealing with the emergency relocation of people from dangerous buildings and implementing projects to renovate buildings and improve urban environments. Some of the main benefits of this material are its high level of eco-friendliness, fire resistance and minimal carbon footprint.
