In 2013−2014 Severstal in partnership with the British Council have delivered the professional development programme for the cultural managers in four regions of the Russian north. The programme is designed to develop a competent, entrepreneurial professional community of cultural managers, who can improve the quality of the cultural offer in the regions.

The concluding stage of the programme is the projects competition. Seven runnersup have been selected and invited to take part in a study tour to the UK in March 2014. Following the results of the study tour and the projects applications, one final winner has been selected by the organisers of the programme. The winner is Elena Bykova, the Creative Director of the Miners Hall of Culture in Vorkuta, Komi republic. Elena’s project, the festival of the miners professions “School-Mine-Chance”, is awarded a grant to support its completion.

The central idea of the festival, which will take place in Vorkuta in May 2014, is to improve the image of the miners professions among the city’s school students. “School” is for widening the knowledge of the miners professions and exploring the opportunity of a career in mining; “Mine” is for training in one of such professions; “Chance” is for having a choice and an opportunity to join the leading employer in the city.

The festival is organised by the Miners Hall of Cultural together with the other leading cultural organisations in Vorkuta — the Art School, the libraries, the exhibition hall. They will run educational and art events that would demonstrate the miners professions in a new light.

“Vorkutaugol’” company (local Severstal branch) and the Miners Hall of Culture have been running different programmes for a number of years to attract new employees to the mine. The have re-established the drift miners clubs, run the competition for the young people, festivals of the miners families, supported the creative education for the company’s employees.
