National crafts: Vologda laces

We’ll again address to the “National Crafts” heading today because we want to tell you about the production of Vologda laces, which have won deserved fame and world-wide recognition for their high artistic value, rich ornament and excellent workmanship. Unfortunately, we know very little about the production of Vologda laces but it is well-known that this craft quickly gained popularity in Russia.
The production of Vologda laces emerged in 1820, when landowners’ serfs began weaving laces to adorn women’s dresses and underclothes, imitating the work of Italian and Flandrian weavers.
What we see is a continuous smooth line, where all patterns, which are equal in length and width, are decorated with a linen braid.
In 1893 4,000 weavers were engaged in the production of laces in the Vologda Region, and by 1912 their number reached 40,000. The photo shows Vologda lace-weavers working.
Vologda lace- weavers make napkins, Jabot collars, pelerines, scarves, ties, and gloves.
Vologda laces quickly gained popularity in Russia and won high awards many times, including the gold medal which the Vologda lace-weavers received at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris, the Grand Prix in Paris, and a gold medal in Brussels.
A museum of laces opened in Vologda in 2010. The exposition includes more than 500 items, which provide information about the history of Vologda laces in Russia and also about the development of the above-mentioned national craft in this country.
