The Mediation Program during the week of 26 February 2005 successfully provided an introduction to mediation to Judge Lidiya Borisovna Petrovskaya of the Vologda Regional Court, and Judges Vera Alexeyevna Bogatyreva and Svetlana Vadimovna Kozlova of the Vologda Oblast Arbitrage Court. Senior Lecturer Ludmila Mikhailiova Nakleitchikova contributed valuable language and cultural connections and participated in training sessions. During the three-day intensive course led by Peter Wolfe and co-taught by Esther Tardy-Wolfe, and in which Judge Kathleen McGuire played an active role, the Russians showed interest in mediation. They discussed mediation's potential for reducing their case loads (about 98 percent of which are now decided judicially), and experimented with mediation techniques in assignments and role-playing. They said they would share their learning with their colleagues and introduce mediation concepts into their practices.
In addition, the Russian delegates visited the Merrimack County Superior Court with Judges McGuire and Edward Fitzgerald, observed motion hearings, and visited other offices including the registry of deeds. They participated in a discussion with Charles Szypszak about the structure of the American judicial system, and had a wide-ranging discussion with non-lawyer employees of the Orr & Reno firm about life in America and Russia.
The Russian delegates also had an active cultural agenda, which included dinners at private homes; restaurant lunches and dinners, including a farewell banquet; a tour of the City of Concord; a visit to the New Hampshire Museum of History; a string quartet concert at the Concord Municipal Auditorium; and a visit to Boston with visits to numerous sites.
