Vasily Vereshchagin's painting "The Prince of Wales' Entry to Jaipur" is again available to the public, Kultura TV channel reports. The largest work of the famous Russian artist is located in India, it is kept in the Victoria Memorial Gallery in Kolkata.

For almost 30 years, the gallery has been under reconstruction, and all this time Vereshchagin's painting was hidden from viewers.

According to Dibakar Karmakar, who heads the work of the museum's restorers in Kolkata, the painting is about 40 square meters. The author left the work uncoated with varnish, so some parts of the image darkened, and some peeled off.

Dibakar Karmakar noted that colleagues from the Tretyakov Gallery had repeatedly offered assistance in the restoration of the canvas, but the Indian masters did it themselves. The work took them over a year.

Vereshchagin's painting reflects the triumph of British rule over India. The Prince of Wales appears in the conquered land as Viceroy. The Indian Maharaja Jaipur, sitting next to him, leaned over to him.

The artist finished painting the canvas after returning from India to St. Petersburg. It is unknown how the painting ended up in Calcutta. According to one version, Vereshchagin sold it to an American collector during an overseas exhibition. Then it was bought by the Maharaja Jaipur, who transported the canvas to India. The painting was in the Kolkata Museum for about a hundred years.

“Vereshchagin is a figure that connects our two peoples. People learn about India through Vereshchagin. And vice versa, "- said the Consul General of Russia in Calcutta Alexey Idamkin.
