48 Hours of VOICES: Highlights of the Festival

The 5th VOICES Film Festival was opened on July 4th in Vologda. During the first two days of the festival the audience managed to see about 30 movies, 4 competitive films, 2 photo exhibitions, 5 workshops, one 'red carpet' and one big concert at the Kremlin square. Before the opening of the Festival Svetlana Proskurina, The President of Jury, set the tone: "The most desired, ringing things are organized on the periphery, on the sidelines, like here and now in Vologda. I remember the words of Alexander Sokurov that the main purpose of Festivals is missing, they have become too commercial. Do not forget that the festivals were always made for the pioneers. So for me VOICES is this workspace and the search of cinematic language."
The Opening Ceremony of the 5th VOICES Film Festival was held on July 4th. It was attended by stars of Russian and European cinema: Serge Avedikyan, Yevgeniy Tsyganov, Olga Sutulova, Justin Waddell, Anthony Wilcox, David Kelly, Igor Voloshin, Nana Jorjadze and many others.
Igor Lysenko, The Director of The Festival, blew the candles out on the anniversary cake in the form of "butterfly" VOICES along with the video message from the First President of VOICES Film Festival Sergei Bodrov. Like in past editions of the Festival, Oleg Kuvshinnikov, the Governor of the Vologda region, broke a plate along with the famous British actress Justine Waddell. Svetlana Svetlichnaya, the famous actress of RSFSR, read verses from the scene. Ken Loach, the Director of the Opening film "Jimmy's Hall", wished good luck to the Festival passing his welcome speech to British producer David Kelly.
During the first two days the jury Kirill Razlogov, Svetlana Proskurina, Serge Avedikyan, Justin Waddell and Olga Sutulov got close and saw 4 competitive films: the Norwegian film "Blind," the Slovenian film "Class Enemy", the German gilm "Stereo" and the British film "Still Life," which Uberto Pasolini presented personally: "In the English translation the film is called "Still Life" but I hope you realize that this film is not about death, it's about life. It has a symmetry, and that's why I chose "this" ending", - said the director.
Yevgeny Tsyganov, an actor, and Olga Sutulova jury member presented film "Dialogues" by Irina Volkova. "This movie is a great example of movies that were filmed penniless, only on enthusiasm," - said Olga.
Igor Voloshin, the Director, opened a series of master classes of VOICES with the music Sex Pistols and wished to the new generation of filmmakers' to refuse the endless remakes by using brilliant things and to achieve catharsis of future viewers."
VOICES Picnic has attracted crowds of fans due to the master class Dmitry "Goblin" Puchkov: "Since I am a former policeman, our intellectuals looking at me like I am a crazy redneck. So I have no colleagues and translators of the movies I don't like either. But of course, I have friends that I listen to and take their criticism."
Two photo exhibitions were opened in honour of the Year of British cinema. Gregory Yaroshenko Russian photographer about Britain and British photographer James Hill - about Russia. You can see the photo exhibitions in the South-west tower of the Kremlin and in the centre of culture "Red Corner." The exhibition is open until the end of the Festival.
The premiere of the film "My mermaid, My Loreley" took place on the 5th of July in "Lenkom" cinema. The film was presented by director Nana Jorjadze, Ekaterina Molchanova, an actress and Valeriy Kalmikov, the producer. The screening was completed with a small concert of Georgian group Asea Sool, which will continue in the evening on July 6th, on VOICES Picnic.
The second day of the Festival ended with a big rock concert by forever young musician Nike Borzov on Kremlin square. On the big stage the band performed the songs from his new album "Everywhere and Nowhere", and all the famous and unique like "Horse." But the most persistent audience stayed overnight at the cinema "Lenkom" and exchanged sleeping on thrillers and dramas.
