OAO Severstal CEO Alexey Mordashov recently commended the winners of the "Worldsteel Challenge" competition in Brussels, awarding them with trophies and certificates.
Severstal is one of the world’s leading vertically integrated steel and steel-related mining companies. Mordashov is also the chairman of the World Steel Association, which sponsored the event.
The annual competitions is conducted online at steeluniversity, which was developed and sponsored by Worldsteel in order to define the most talented students and young engineers from 30 countries.
The task of this year's competition was to refine an order of construction steel grade that is used in earth-moving equipment. Contestants had 2.5 hours to produce the requested steel at minimum cost. The winner finished the task at only $23.13 per ton.
"I am delighted to meet 'the next generation of Bessemers' here today. The future of the steel industry lies in the areas of innovation and high-technology development, which will be driven forward by the winners today. The steel industry offers great career opportunities for those who wish to help society to meet its future sustainability challenges," Mordashov said.
