Maslenitsa festival in Vologda: party like a real Russian!
16.02.2018 14:24

Maslenitsa festival (Pancake week) that is held in Vologda till February, 18th is a great opportunity to learn the ancient Slavic traditions and to have a lot of fun participating in action games.
As it stands, Maslenitsa serves many purposes. Maslenitsa signals the exit of winter and heralds the coming of spring. Through the whole week people cook bliny (pancakes) and eat them with honey, caviar, jam, fresh sour cream and butter.
The authorities of the Vologda Region invite all the residents of the region and the guests of the city to take part in entertainment activities accompanied by pancakes, fun songs, games, feast fighting and sledging.
Blini (Russian pancakes) are essential to the celebration of Maslenitsa. Said to symbolize the sun- being warm, round, and golden-they are an appropriate warning to the lingering cold weather. Blini are given to friends and family all through the week. A gigantic pancake cake that looks like a stack of 5000 pancakes will be served by Vologda’s catering professionals on February 18th.
The festival will finish this Sunday with the traditional burning of Lady Maslenitsa straw effigy as the final act of saying good-bye to the already passed winter.
