Appropriately located near the most ancient architectural ensemble - the picturesque Vologda Kremlin, the Vologda Lace Museum was opened in autumn 2010.
The museum hosts several expositions in nearly 1,500 sq m of exhibition space. The exhibition extends over two levels and covers all ages of lace-making from the early 17th century - showcasing gorgeous and rare hand-made designs, to later industrial production and through to contemporary lace presented in haute couture.
Put together throughout several years, the museum features needle and bobbin lace from the 17th century onward, of Spanish, French, German, Polish and Slovak origin, costumes and accessories of the same eras, photos and other materials covering the history of lace.
Several years ago the collection of Western European lace and fabrics of the Vologda Museum of Lace received new exhibits from a Swiss patron of art Amelia Hussar. On behalf of her name a collection of fabrics, lace and jewelry was brought to Vologda by Consul of RF Embassy in Switzerland Konstantin Nefedov.
The gift from Amelia Hussar was timed to coincide with the 200th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Switzerland. This was the first time the Vologda Lace Museum received such exhibits dating from 18th-19th centuries.
In addition to it, in 2012 Ruth Scheidegger-Meier, daughter of the famous Swiss writer Gerhard Meier also presented a gift to the Vologda State Museum-Preserve - a collection of lace articles dating from the 18th-20th centuries.
In 2014 Ruth Scheidegger-Meier presented one more unique gift to the Vologda Lace Museum - an album with samples of fabrics dating from 1793. The 18th century was the time of rapid development of weaving manufactories in the countries of Western Europe - Germany, England and France.
This time Prof. Dr. Rainer Vollkommer , director of Liechtenstein National Museum, brought to Vologda unique samples of Liechtenstein lace - lace embroidered with straw.
The residents of Vologda and guests to the city will be able to see new exhibits.
Donation of these assets became possible thanks to cooperation between the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Vologda Region, the Vologda State Museum-Preserve, the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Switzerland and representatives of the Swiss cultural figures.
