June 22 - the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow

In 1996, to commemorate the loss and the suffering during those dark days Russia proclaimed June 22 as the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow.
On June 22nd, 1941, at 04.00 am without declaration of war the armed forces of Nazi Germany attacked the borders of the USSR, giving start to the Great Patriotic War (June 22, 1941 - May 9, 1945).
The bloodiest war in the history of our country began. Tens of millions of people lost their lives, the economic potential of the country and its cultural property were severely damaged.
On this day, we remember the hardest trials that befell our grandfathers and great-grandfathers, grandmothers and great-grandmothers.
