IX International Gavrilin Festival will close in Vologda Region today.

An international festival named after Valery Gavrilin, the great Russian composer opened in Vologda on Oct 19 with a concert dedicated to the musician. Valery Gavrilin was born in Vologda and travelled extensively in order to pursue his study of folk music.
The festival was first held in 1999, when Valery Gavrilin passed away. The festival was founded by the Vologda Region Government and the Department of Culture and Tourism. Since 2004, the festival has been given an international status. The main objective of the event is to reveal new talents and to perpetuate the memory of Valery Gavrilin.
Being held for the ninth time, the event has gathered musicians of different generations, genres and national schools. The festival gives an opportunity to get acquainted with the best Russian orchestras, music groups and artists. All the musicians perform the works of Valery Gavrilin.
More than 30 performances, concerts, master classes and other festival events are organised in Vologda and Cherepovets during the festival. Russian Notebook cycle, music for the ballet Anyuta and Chimes are the best-known of Gavrilin’s compositions.
On November 29, Yuri Bashmet and the Moscow Soloists chamber orchestra will close the music festival with a concert at the Art College, Vologda City.
