Brief overview of key industries of the Vologda Region

The Vologda Oblast is a highly-developed industrial region, which has a network of transport and energy infrastructure, stable ratings of investment attractiveness and solvency. The basis of Vologda industry is made up of 300 large- and medium-sized enterprises and about 550 small businesses. Major industries of the oblast are ferrous metallurgy and chemical industry (they are primarily concentrated in Cherepovets), machine building and metal processing (Vologda), woodworking industry (large and small wood producing companies are found in the districts of Sokol, Sheksna, Kharovsk, Cherepovets and Veliky Ustyug), pulp and paper production (the town of Sokol).
In terms of production of industrial goods per capita the Vologda Oblast takes the 21st place in Russia. Industry (including extractive industry, manufacturing industry and production and distribution of electric power, gas and water) is the major employer and the largest sector of the oblast's economy. In 2014 the index of industrial production increased by 3,7%, compared to 2013.
