Geographical location
The District of Sokol is situated in the centre of the Vologda Region on both banks of the Sukhona River. Today Sokol is the third largest city in the Vologda Oblast.
Border regions: the districts of Kharovsk, Syamzha, Tot’ma, Mezhdurech’ye, Vologda, Ust’-Kubunskoye within the Vologda Oblast.
Inland waters: the Sukhona River and its affluents
The district of Sokol is a vast wooded area with some 71% (295,000 has) of its total land covered with forests: mostly deciduous, but also coniferous (pine and spruce). Wood is the most precious treasure of the region.
Transport
Distance from Vologda: 35 km.
In Sokol district, there are three important transport routes: the Northern railway, the Sukhona River and one of the principal highways in Russia, M8, which connects Moscow and Arkhangelsk.
Other roads connect Sokol with Kharovsk and Ustye. There are also local roads, with the bus traffic originating from Sokol.
Sukhona is navigable in Sokol; however, there is no passenger navigation.
Economy
The pulp and paper enterprises make up the industrial glory of the Vologda Oblast. Apart from the paper industry, timber and food sectors are also highly-developed. Manufacturing is the major employer, producing goods ranging from woodworking articles to milk products, paper goods to furniture. Its main products are paper, cardboard, solid fibreboard, sawn timber, plywood, bricks, ceramic products, furniture items, dairy and milk products, meat and sausage products. The town is home to two large paper mills.
Attractions and tourism
Sokol offers several tourist itineraries connected with the renowned Russian poet Nikolai Rubtsov, the industrial development of the district (including visits to some enterprises), also visits to the Church of Transfiguration of Our Lord and a museum of agricultural machinery.
History
The village of Sokolovo existed on this location since at least 1615. Since 1796, the village was part of Kadnikovsky Uyezd of Vologda Governorate. In 1897, a paper mill was built near the village and Sokolovo became the primary place of residence of the employees of the mill.
On July 15, 1929, the uyezds were abolished, the governorates merged into Northern Krai, and Sverdlovsky District with the administrative center in the work settlement of Sokol was established among others. It became a part of Vologda Okrug of Northern Krai. In 1932 Sokol was granted town status, and the district was renamed the District of Sokol.
