On May 29, 2021 the official ceremony of keel laying of a head barge was held at the Cherepovets Shipbuilding Plant. The ceremony was attended by Vologda Region Governor Oleg Kuvshinnikov.
Creation of a shipyard is strategically important for Cherepovets City that is home to one of the most historic, fundamental and important global industries - metallurgy. This is another step towards the development and diversification of the city's economy.
At present, about 50 new working places have already been created, and in the future the company will employ about a hundred more specialists. This is a well-equipped, full cycle shipbuilding facility. Every year about 30 modern river-sea class vessels will be produced here. The plant will manufacture new vessels of excellent quality for the country’s cargo water transport in the coming years.
“This is a historic day for the Vologda Region - shipbuilding is reviving in the region. Barges and tug boats have not been built in Cherepovets for many years, since the collapse of the Soviet Union. And today the construction of the first vessel has begun in Cherepovets. Several factors attracted investors to the region. First, Cherepovets is a major transport hub and a port of the five seas. It is conveniently located in the Volga-Baltic Waterway system. Secondly, the investor received regional and federal tax benefits. Cherepovets Shipyard is included in the list of residents of an advanced socio-economic development territory. Third, the region’s investment legislation is favourable - there were no bureaucratic obstacles with the provision of space for the plant construction. And finally, the shipyard is located in the vicinity of Severstal, one of the largest Cherepovets-based steel producers in Russia”, noted Vologda Region Governor Oleg Kuvshinnikov.
