Ivan Skobrev

Ivan Skobrev (born on February 8, 1983 in Khabarovsk to a family of sportsmen) is a Russian speed skater who specialises in all-round.
Ivan took up skating at twelve, his first coach being his father Alexander Skobrev. His mother Irina Skobreva, a master of sports in speed skating, was a member of Russia's national team.
Ivan graduated from the Olympic Reserve School in St. Petersburg. In 2003 he moved to Cherepovets, Vologda Oblast and began to compete for the local sports club "Severstal". At the 2003 Russian Championship in Chelyabinsk he became Russia's overall champion. He made the podium four times - he finished first in the 1,500 and 5,000 meters, second in the 500 and 10,000 meters.
At the European Championships in Holland held on January 9-11, 2004 Ivan Skobrev brought the Russian record in the men's 500, 5,000 and 10,000 meters races and was fifth in all-round.
At the 2004 World Championships in Norway he skated to the ninth place finish in all-round.
At the 2006 European Championships he finished in fifth place. He qualified for four distances for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. He finished eleventh in the 5,000 meters, sixth in the 1,500 and 10,000 meters and fifth in the team pursuit.
At the 2007 World Championships in Salt Lake City he won the bronze medal in the team pursuit.
At the World Cup Speed Skating competition in Hamar, Norway, November, 2009 Ivan finished third in the men's 10,000 metres race and brought the Russian record to 13.01.41.
Ivan skated to a second place finish in the men's 5000 meter event during the ISU World Cup speed skating race in Calgary, December, 2009.
Ivan Skobrev is Russia's best hope for success on the Richmond Olympic Oval in Vancouver, Canada. The athlete is reaching his peak now that he trains with Enrico Fabris in an international team. His best chances are over the long distances, and he is getting better as the season goes on. He had top three finishes in his last three World Cup long distance outings and added bronze at the Hamar European all-round championships in January, 2010.
On February 13 Ivan won a bronze medal in the 5,000 meters at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games. On February 23 Ivan Skobrev took the Olympic silver in men's 10,000 meters speed skating event on day 12 at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics.
