Albina Akhatova

The Russian biathlon team has provided some fantastic champions: Dmitry Vasilyev, Anatoly Alyabyev, Anfisa Reztsova, Anna Bogalii-Titovets, Sergei Chepikov. A special place should also be reserved for the successes of Vologda's own - Albina Akhatova.
Albina Akhatova, a Russian biathlete, was born on November 13, 1976 to a family of sportsmen in Nikolsk, Vologda Oblast. At the age of three the little girl took up skiing. Two years later the family proceeded to Labytnangi, Tyumen Oblast. There Albina went on cross country skiing and since 1993 she went in for biathlon.
In 1997 at the world junior championship in Sweden Albina became twice champion. In 1998 she won the gold medal with the Russian team at the World Championship.
In 1999 in Oslo, she won the bronze medal, and in 2004 in Oberhof, Germany, she won the silver medal, both over the distance of 15 km. She also was part of Russia's winning relay teams at the 2000 and 2003 World Championships. Akhatova also won the gold medals in the mass start at the 2003 World Championship held in Khanty-Mansiysk.

In the 1999 World Cup in Oslo she won the bronze medal and in the 2004 World Cup in Oberhof, Germany, she won the silver medal, both over the distance of 15 km. She also participated in winning the relay in the 2000 and 2003 World Championships.
At the 2006 World Cup event Albina made the podium three times - she was third in the 10 km pursuit in Ruhpolding and third in the sprint and pursuit in Antholz.
At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, she won bronze medals in the 10 km pursuit and 15 km individual. She also won gold, silver, and bronze medals in Olympic relay competitions in 2006, 1998, and 2002, respectively.
After a break in the 2006/07 season, she returned in January 2008. At the 2008 World Championship in Östersund, she won the silver medal in the 7.5 km sprint and the bronze medal in the subsequent 10 km pursuit.
During the 2008 World Cup in Pyeongchang Albina Akhatova won the bronze medal in the pursuit and the bronze medal in the sprint in Khanty-Mansiysk.
The residents of Nikolsk cherish Albina Akhatova. Albina's father goes on coaching both his daughter who has improved steadily under the careful tuition of a thoroughly clever coach and little children at a sports school named after Albina's mother.
