Anatoly Alyabyev
honoured master of sports (1980), biathlon
World champion (biathlete), twice Olympic champion (1980, the Lake Placid Games)
Anatoly was born on December 12, 1951 in the village of Danilkovo, Velsky District, Arkhangelsk Oblast. Later the family proceeded to Verkhivazh'ye, Vologda Oblast.
In 1967 Anatoly entered the faculty of physical training, Vologda normal school and began to train at Children and Youth Sport School of Spartak in Vologda. Following his graduation, Alyabyev worked as a teacher of physical training in the settlement of Verkhivazh'ye. Then he served in the Army and competed as a senior while training at the Armed Forces sports society in Leningrad.
At the 1980 Olympics he was, together with Frank Ullrich the dominant biathlete taking gold medals in the 20 km and on the relay and bronze in the 10 km. Alyabyev best season came in 1980-1981, when he became second overall. Alyabyev was awarded Order of the Red Banner of Labour (1980). He graduated from Lesgaft Military Institute of Physical Culture in 1981 and earned the Candidate of Pedagogical Science degree in 1997.
