Grigory Landsberg
physicist, academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences, discover of combinatorial and selective light diffusion
Grigory Landsberg was born on January 10 (12), 1890 in Vologda. He was educated in a gymnasium in Nizhny Novgorod (Gorky), received a university degree from Moscow University, faculty of Physics and Mathematics in 1913. After graduating, he published his first research work on resistance and began a teaching career.
Over the course of his career, Grigory Landsberg worked in Moscow Mechanical Institute (1945 - 1947), Moscow State University (1947 - 1951), and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (1951 - 1957).
He made a tangible contribution into training of young physicists and gained celebtity as an author of the best textbooks on optics and elementary physics for university students.
In 1932 Grigory Landsberg was elected a Corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences. On November 30, 1946 he became a full member of it. His further academic achievements include a Doctor of Physico-Mathematical Sciences degree that he received without defending a thesis. The main focus of Landsberg's research was on combinatorial and selective light diffusion. Another direction of the scientist's research was devoted to applied optics, spectral analysis of metals and their application in engineering.
Grigory Landsberg's awards include two Lenin Orders and a medal for valiant labour during World War II.
The scientist passed away on February 2, 1957.
