Vologda Oblast Took Part in Helsinki European Forum "Fifth Space"

On April 17-19, 2006 a delegation from the Vologda Oblast involving Vice-Governor I. Pozdnyakov, rector of the Cherepovets State University V. Gryzlov, rector of the Vologda Institute of Education Development V. Sudakov, and rector of the Vologda Agriculture technical school L. Klimina participated in an international conference "State Standards in Education. Creation of Common Education Space of Russia in EU". The conference was held within the framework of the Helsinki European Forum "Fifth Space" and administered by the Finnish Education Ministry and SITRA, development and research fund of Finland.

Aims and objectives of the conference:

  • to use intellectual heritage and expertise of Russia and the EU with a view to improving the competitiveness and attraction of European higher education in relation to other continents;
  • to determine criteria of education quality and new educational standards requirements, licensing and accreditation of state and non-state higher educational institutions.

Rector of the Vologda Institute of Education Development Professor V. Sudakov presented a report "Expertise of the Vologda Oblast - to EU Educational Space".

Since 2005 the educational institutions of the Vologda Oblast has started training and preparation for accession to the Bologna Process that will provide for parity partnership relations in training highly-qualified specialists. The Bologna Process aims to establish a common European area of higher education by 2010. The objectives are the introduction of undergraduate and postgraduate levels in all countries, with first degrees no shorter than 3 years; the elimination of remaining obstacles to the mobility of students and teachers.
