Oleg Kuvshinnikov attends a meeting of the Russian Security Council.

The meeting of the Russian Security Council was held in the Archangelsk Oblast Government.
Taking part in the meeting were Plenipotentiary Representative of the RF President in Russia’s North-West Vladimir Bulavin, Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev, heads of Russian regions in the North-West Federal District, permanent members of the Security Council, representatives of law enforcement agencies and units and agencies responsible for carrying out military security missions.
The subjects on the agenda included issues related to measures to ensure ecological safety and preservation of water resources, and the decriminalization of timber industry complex of the North-West of the country.
The Vologda Oblast is a vast wooded area with some 70% of its total land covered with forests. Wood is the most precious treasure of the region. 11.7 mln hectares of the area are covered by forest vegetation.
In terms of the volume of wood harvesting in 2013 the Vologda Oblast took the second place among Russian regions (14 million cubic meters).
Forest management, forest legislation, detection and suppression of illegal logging are indicated as priority issues by the Vologda Oblast Government.
Measures aimed at legalization of forest business implemented in the Vologda Region were approved at the meeting of the Security Council of the Russian Federation.
In addition to it, the meeting’s participants exchanged views on the efforts underway in preservation of water resources and ecological safety of a water basin.
On the territory of the Vologda Region there are about 20,000 of waterways with a total length of over 70,000 kilometers and more than 4,000 lakes.
The Vologda Oblast in cooperation with the Federal Agency of Water Resources implements a number of activities aiming to ensure ecological safety and preservation of water resources.
"Today it was decided to tighten environmental control and supervision in respect of industrial enterprises and vessels that pollute water basins. All the solutions are recorded in the protocol and are mandatory for the subjects of the North-West," concluded acting Governor Oleg Kuvshinnikov.
