Economic Status



About 50100 people live on the territory of the District of Vologda. The population is squeezed into some 924 villages and settlements. The number of labour force is over 20500 people, 9278 people are employed in the agroindustrial complex.

The total square of the District of Vologda is 4611 sq.km. The majority of the district is lowland with over 50 percent of its total land covered by forests, both coniferous and deciduous.

On the territory of the district there are some mineral resources: deposits of clay with the total reserves equalling 25 mln cubic m, reserves of 75 mln cubic m of peat, and deposits of construction sand and gravel with total reserves of 5 mln cubic m.

There are many species of food fish in the district's rivers - white fish, white salmon, pike, bream, pike perch and perch.

Agriculture is a clear dominant in the district's economy. By virtue of natural conditions and economic factors, cattle-breeding and dairy-farming are clearly expressed specializations of the district. The enterprises producing a great selection of meat and milk products meet the district's demands for meat, milk, potato, eggs and vegetables.

The offtake of the disrtict's agricultural enterprises amounts to 15 percent of the total oblast's output of milk and meat, 15 percent of all potatoes and 85 percent of all the vegetables grown on the territory of the Vologda Oblast.

There 120 trade enterprises, 30 public catering establishments and over 280 shops in the District of Vologda.
