District of Gryazovets

The economy of the District of Gryazovets is based on diverse natural resources.
On the territory of the Gryazovets District there are considerable mineral resources - 4 deposits of clay and loam for manufacture of bricks with the total reserves equalling 6.4 mln cubic m, reserves of 11.8 mln tons of quartz sand, 7 deposits of sand and gravel with reserves amounting to 6.6 mln cubic m , and 9 - with total reserves of 32.4 mln tons of peat. There are deposits of sapropel muds equalling to 172,000 tons. Prognosis resources of oil on the territory of the Mezhdurech'ye, Tot'ma and Gryazovets districts come practically to 470 mln tons, 113 mln tons are mineable resources.
District of Gryazovets is a vast wooded area with some 74% of its total land area covered by forests.
Industrial complex of the District of Gryazovets is represented by more than 50 enterprises working in the following fields:
- Power engineering;
- Machine building;
- Timber industry;
- Industry of construction materials;
- Light industry;
- Food industry;
- Printing industry.
In the branch structure of industry, timber and food industries take a dominating position. OOO MONZALES handles 75% of the total volume of rickers production. OOO MYUNZENSKY DOK specializes in production of saw - timber and wood - based panels. Both enterprises do not operate at full power. Investments are still lacking.
The gas pipeline LIGHTS OF THE NORTH which is affiliated with the RAO GAZPROM company creates working places for the residents of the city. The gas - compressor station delivers natural gas to industrial centres of Russia and abroad. Construction of the north-western pipeline connecting St.Petersburg and Gryazovets (via Vyborg) will be carried out in 2006-2008. As estimated by experts the amount of annual gas delivery will increase from 5,0 billion cubic metres in 2008 to 30,45 billion cubic metres in 2016.
Transport infrastructure is highly developed in the District of Gryazovets. The district has 280 km of highways and 160 km of railways. Two railway lines go through it and it connects many railway stations of the North railway. The network of buses makes getting to and around the district easy. However, demand for telephone services is not fully satisfied in the district. There is almost no investment so far which is badly needed to replace equipment and communication lines. Modernization of telecommunication system, namely establishment of a digital telephone network is of paramount importance for the district.
The district of Gryazovets is one of the largest producers of farm commodities and agricultural goods in the oblast. The share of argiculture in the regional GNP makes up 6.9%. Agroindustrial complex is represented by 17 enterprises of different organizational forms and a number of farms. Dairy - farming and cattle - breeding are clearly expressed specializations of the district. Farmers of Gryazovets are very competitive and adapt their activities in line with changing market needs. There is a growing demand for the district's products which are biologically sound and additive - free.
By virtue of natural conditions and climate, farming is historically developed in the district. There are no special conditions of soil in the district. People's use of the land determine stable crops of cereals, flax and forage crops. Some farms are engaged in seed - growing. Four organizations deal with sale of pedigree cattle.
