District of Chagoda

Industry

Glass industry is the largest sector of the district's economy, making up 86 % of the output aggregate.

Over the past years the glass-works of the district produced a wide variety of glass articles ranging from windowpane to insulators to bottles to pharmaceutical flanks and tanks.

At present the glass industry is on the rise. Three glass-works are working on the territory of the district. They produce container glass of broad spectrum - bottles for beer, wine, cognac, champagne, oil and mineral water supplying brewing and wine companies of St.Petersburg, Omsk, Yaroslavl, Tatarstan and the Krasnodar District.

GlasswareOAO Pokrovsky glass-works has been granted a long-term loan by the World Bank for Reconstruction and Development (WBRD) to build a third workshop. That was the first investment project of the WBRD on the territory of the Vologda Oblast. According to preliminary estimates the annual output of a glass-melting furnace in a new workshop will make up 165 mln items.

OAO Smerdomsky glass-works produces glass of different colour - white, light green, dark green and brown. The output amounts to 55 mln glass articles per annum.

Jubilee bottleOOO Chagodoshchensky Glass-Works and Company is the youngest plant on the market. Its predecessor produced flat glass. The enterprise failed to go through economic reforms and went bankrupt. Owing to the active backing of the local self-government and high-ranking officials of the Vologda Oblast, and also investments from the largest brewing company STEPAN RAZIN the Chagodoshchensky glass-works was reconstructed and adjusted to production of container glass.

The production of the Chagodoshchensky glass-works aroused interest at the St.Petersburg Exhibition-Fair "Beer Auction" that was arranged in March of 2001. A "Jubilee" bottle designed in the image and likeness of an ancient museum exhibit deserved a positive assessment and won the gold medal for distinguished design.

Though glass industry is a clear dominant the district of Chagoda remains a challenging environment for investments into other branches of industry.

Construction of gas facilities is under wayGasification contributed greatly to the district's development. Trunk lines were laid in the remote settlements of the district.

One of the recognized treasures of the district are forests covering 63,9 percent of its total land area. The forests are the combination of leafy groves, mixed woods and coniferous forests. Typical representatives of fauna are elks, bears, wild boars, hares, foxes and martens.

OAO CHAGODAKOMLES is the main timber enterprise with a total wood output volume of 100 thousand cubic metres.

The district is rich in mineral resources - quartz, limestone, carbonate strata, rubble, brick earth and peat. The DEDOVO POLE, a state-run enterprise with a total annual output volume of 25000 tons of peat briquettes, is concerned with extraction of milled peat, production of micro green houses and peat briquettes. Peat is of great commercial significance. Peat briquettes are used as a highly effective source of fuel for domestic heating. Peat has widespread use as a plant-growth medium in a variety of horticultural and agricultural applications. Commercial applications include potting soils, lawn and garden soil amendments. In industry, peat is used primarily as a filtration medium to remove toxic materials from process waste streams. Peat is an effective absorbent for fuel and oil spills on land and water.
