National Flag Day is celebrated in Vologda on August 22.

Vologda Oblast Governor Oleg Kuvshinnikov congratulated the residents of the Vologda Region on the National Flag Day.

Russia adopted its first national flag more than three hundred years ago. August 22 commemorates raising of the present flag over the Russian Supreme Soviet building after a 1991 coup attempt.

Each of the three colours is given an official interpretation. Red stands for “great power”, blue represents the Virgin Mary, and white is the colour of freedom and independence. They also imply the union of White, Minor and Greater Russia.

Throughout the day, a variety of cultural and societal activities will take place in cities and towns of the Vologda Oblast.
