39 cultural institutions, 37 libraries, a centre of aesthetic education for children and teenagers, 2 musical schools, an art school and a museum function on the territory of the District of Vologda.

The number of day-care centres and nursery schools comes to 32. Secondary schools of the district total 17. There is a children's home and a vocational school in the district.

There is a great number of sport amateurs who participate in different amateur teams. 34 gymnasiums, a swimming pool, 6 fitness centres and a sport school for children and youth function for all those wishing to keep shape, health and good spirit. Settlement of Maisky provides the best recreational outlets and a sport-complex in the district. Its ice hockey stadium has become home to the All-Russian games "Golden Puck" arranged for children's village teams.

The district takes an active part in the regional programmes and events.
