Every region has its claim to fame, but there's none sweeter than Vologda's position as Russia's butter capital. Butter-making is one of the clearly expressed specializations of the Vologda District. It boasts the Vologda Dairy Academy (founded in 1911), a local creamery and a research institute and a livestock breeding farm.

Social sphere: 39 cultural institutions, 37 libraries, a centre of aesthetic education for children and teenagers, 2 musical schools, an art school and a museum; 17 secondary schools, 32 day-care centres and nursery centres; a hospital; 34 gymnasiums, a swimming pool, 6 fitness centres and a sport school for children and youth. Settlement of Maisky provides the best recreational outlets and a sport-complex in the district.

The folklore festival “The Village - the Soul of Russia” celebrates and promotes traditional Russian culture, including music, dance, crafts, games and customs, by bringing together folk groups, artisans, and researchers from across Russia.
