Kadnikov is one of the ancient cities of the region. It is located about 12 km North-East of Rabanga on a hill nearby the Sodoma River. The place is very picturesque - green coppices, woods and the river's mirror-like surface.
The town's name was known in the ecclesiastical world. Saint Philip of Rabanga was the founder of the Savior-Transfiguration monastery near Kadnikov. He spent the beginning of his monastic life in the monastery of St. Dionysios of Glushitsa, and was one of his closest disciples.
Upon the demise of his teacher, St. Philip left the Glushitsa monastery and settled in a sparsely populated area at the confluence of the Sukhona and Rabanga Rivers. The saint wanted to lead his life in complete solitude. The local inhabitants learned about him, and seeking his guidance to become monks, they began to come to him in the wilderness. Accepting this as a mandate from above, St. Philip travelled to Rostov to the holy Archbishop Ephraim and asked the saint's blessing to rise a monastery and to build a church in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord (the temple was built in 1447).
The settlement of Kadnikov got the status of a town in 1780. A bit later a busy trading route to Arkhangelsk was laid through it. It contributed greatly to the town's development. The majority of the population was engaged in trade and handicrafts.
Within 150 years Kadnikov was a chief town of the district.
At the beginning of the 20th century the role of Kadnikov gradually diminished as the North railway which did not pass through Kadnikov was laid.
Kadnikov's history is also the story of many exceptional people. The great Russian poet Vasily I. Krasov was born in Kadnikov in 1810. N.Ilinsky, a famous local lore scientist, professor of the Vologda Dairy Academy and poet P.Mezhakov also come from Kadnikov. The name of another resident of the town I.Perfiliev is well-known to evetybody who is interested in horticulture.
At present Kadnikov is an agricultural centre of the region with a population of 5,500 people. It looks more like a settlement - the soaring forests, the expanse of still undeveloped fields and green coppices can be seen from any house of it. The town has a flax factory. OAO KADNIKOVSKOYE is a chief producer of corn flakes and other foodstuff.
Near Kadnikov there is an ancient memorial park "Gorka" (hill) which is relatively well - preserved. It is located on a picturesque hill on the bank of the Dvinitsa River. The place holds many memories of Pavel V. Zasodimsky, the famous Russian writer.
