Kharovsk's workers are employed primarily in timber and wood working industries which are clear dominants in the town's economy. Dairy-farming, metal working, food industry and processing of rotted straw are also clearly expressed specializations of Kharovsk. Industry of Kharovsk is represented by ten enterprises of various organizational and legal forms and three affiliates.
The products manufactured by the district's enterprises are lumber, saw-timber, sash pulley, doors, confectionery, bakery, tinned fruit, macaroni and wood chips. The proportion of timber and wood working products make 85.7% in the total volume of Kharovsk's industrial production. Since in terms of both employment and production, timber industry is the most important component of the district's economy, its modernization is essential for the overall economic development because it will create a consumer surplus that can be saved and invested in other economic sectors.
Agriculture of Kharovsk District is represented by more than 50 enterprises. Most farms are engaged in dairy-farming and cattle-breeding.
Accommodation of the population is one of the most acute problems in the district and will remain its priority objective over the coming years. Lack of investment from domestic investors makes the authorities of the district seek investment opportunities in high-growth sectors of the Oblast to build dwelling houses and objects for nonproductive sphere. Some apartments are constructed with share holding of the population.
