International Lace Festival VITA LACE

Vologda lace, a brand name today, has a proud history, which began in the 18th century. The patterns of floral, ornamental designs, with flowing and smooth lines, are produced mostly in white. They look like a frosty window in winter. Made of flax or cotton threads, Vologda lace is light, yet durable and strong. Vologda flax has a special quality, called "northern silk."
The International Lace Festival VITA LACE collects everything related to the world of linen industry: fabrics, clothes, textile, souvenirs, as well as looms, spinning machines and accessories.
The program of the festival includes lace making competitions and exhibitions, thematic lace making workshops, round-table discussions, fashion shows and numerous accompanying events of a creative and cultural nature.
Vologda hosted the 1st International Lace Festival VITA LACE from June 23rd through 25th, 2011. The festival was organized by the Vologda Oblast Government with an active backing of the RF President, the RF Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Agriculture.
800 trade visitors from 24 Russian regions and 10 foreign countries attended it. Foreign and Russian companies displayed their products, equipment and achievements in flax cultivation and processing.
Vologda won a mention in the Russian Book of Records thanks to the most populous lace-making workshop that took place in Vologda on June 24, 2011. 570 lace-makers from different regions of Russia and foreign countries gave a master class in the art of lace-making in the city's central square. The members of 10 countries- Australia, Bulgaria, Croatia, France, Ireland, Canada, Latvia, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia as well as representatives from 24 Russian regions took part in this campaign. The lace-makers were set in a special way - in the form of a snowflake, the main lace element. The record-setting was registered by a representative of the Russian Book of Records in the presence of the wife of the Russian President.
II International Lace Festival VITA LACE was indicated by the Vologda Oblast Government as one of the priority cultural events in 2014. The Festival was devoted to the 22nd Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. Vologda’s laces were used in the Olympic patchwork quilt.
The scope of the event was also impressive. Trade visitors from Russian regions, from France, Belgium, Denmark and Bulgaria attended it.
III International Lace Festival VITA LACE was devoted to ecology and environment. The Russian president signed a decree making 2017 the Year of Ecology. The move is designed to attract public attention to environmental problems, maintain ecological diversity and protect the ecological security of the country.
The highlights of the Festival were an exhibition-competition "Lace of life", a photo exhibition, fashion shows and master classes.
Alexander Vasilyev, a famous Russian and French fashion historian, collector and interior designer took part in III International Lace Festival VITA LACE.
Ulyana Sergeenko, a famous Russian designer also participated in the festival. The Ulyana Sergeenko brand is now gaining worldwide popularity. It’s not only Russian stars who are wearing Ulyana Sergeenko lines these days, but Western celebrities, too. Ulyana Sergeenko is a recent brand that held its debut show in 2011. Ulyana is known as the Russian lady, a Russian matryoshka and a style icon à la russe.
IV International Lace Festival VITA LACE held on July 14-17, 2022 was devoted to preservation and development of handicrafts as part of the original culture and heritage of the nation. The topic was especially important taking into account the fact that 2022 was declared by the President of Russia the Year of Cultural Heritage of the Peoples of Russia.
The highlights of the Festival were an exhibition-competition "The Changing Lace: From the Origins to Modern Times", fashion shows and master classes. One of the most spectacular events of the festival was a "Lace Assembly" which was held on the territory of the Vologda State Museum-Reserve. The event was devoted to the 350th anniversary of the birth of the first Russian emperor Peter the Great. The symbols of the campaign were images of the monogram of the first Russian emperor and the imperial crown. During two hours, 250 participants of the festival made these lace works.
IV International Lace Festival VITA LACE attracted lace-makers from Russia, Estonia, Uzbekistan, Poland and Donetsk People's Republic.
